IBM Power Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Need stronger ciphers when encrypting the AIX file systems.

We've AIX servers with OS level at 7100-05-03-1846. When implementing AIX EFS (encrypted file system), the only ciphers available are as per the efsenable command documentation are as follows:

List of supported algorithms for keystores:
1 RSA_1024
2 RSA_2048
3 RSA_4096

List of supported ciphers for files:
1 AES_128_CBC
2 AES_192_CBC
3 AES_256_CBC
4 AES_128_ECB
5 AES_192_ECB
6 AES_256_ECB

I think IBM needs to introduce stronger ciphers to enable encryption on AIX. Let's assume the above ciphers are added to the sshd_config file, they're a STIG (Security Technical Implementation Guide). so, hopefully IBM implements stronger ciphers.

future AIX investment in data at rest encryption will be in AIX logical volume encryption first introduced in AIX 7.2 Technology level 5. AIX logical volume encryption supports more modern ciphers than compared with AIX EFS.

Hello, we use SHA256 and AES256-CTR.

I've created a case number (TS002341297) with the support team and here is the snapshot of the support team comments
I have discussed this with our development team.   It is currently not possible to use aes256-ctr encryption. They recommend opening an RFE and requesting that aes256-ctr be added to EFS ciphers.  The RFE will be evaluated by our development team and you should receive a response directly from the team.

.Hi, Please specify the required ciphers for your organization. Thanks,
