The default hash function for passwords checking in AIX or VIO is the legacy crypt() function and is accepting only first 8 characters (for hashes). I'm not sure why old crypt() function is still used by default, but from security perspective sha1 ("ssha1") or other smarter from LPA functions currently available (from AIX 5.3 TL7 and AIX 6.1) would be probably the better choice - as a default. The any current version of AIX or VIO still checks by default only first 8 characters of any user password (due to legacy "crypt()" function used). Without any modification and configuration of LPA (Loadable Password Algorithm) if user sets his password to "MyPassword!" the system in fact checks password (hash) input only for "MyPasswo".
