In some cases after disk I/O error there is an entry logged in system error log with recommndation to run fcsk on one or more filesystems:
B6DB68E0 0424065319 I O SYSJ2 FILE SYSTEM RECOVERY REQUIRED
It is not possible to run full fsck on a mounted filesystem but unmounting it would require application downtime. In case of core applications such downtime is not easily accepted by business parts of the company - application may still be running and reporting no errors.
In such cases it would be extremely valuable to be able to run full fsck on a mounted filesystems.
