Support for LDAP netgroups and assigning LDAP users to local UNIX groups

Unable to assign LDAP users membership to local UNIX groups.

The bank's LDAP service uses LDAP Netgroups as a core design element to group various entities within the bank and define access controls. We have a complex tree of several 1000s of LDAP netgroups defined. So there is no way around using LDAP netgroups, 'compat' registry and 'netgroups' options in our AIX LDAP client & module configurations. While LDAP authentication works just fine, LDAP users cannot be assigned to local groups.

After various attempts at getting a working configuration by IBM AIX support staff in the case above, we were advised of a limitation of the 'domainlessgroups' feature in AIX which otherwise would have allowed this to work.

This appears to be a significant limitation of AIX especially considering other *nix operating systems like RHEL and Solaris are able to do so without issues. One would expect adding a user to a group, both of which are known to the OS irrespective of source/registry, is something the OS should be able to manage without disconnect between parts of the OS. Eg. chuser fails (invalid group), but chgroup works, but then lsuser will not recognize the update made by chgroup to /etc/group for the same user.

    Hi,

I am one of the technical resources working on this issue and I can confirm that we are not using NIS netgroups.
We require AIX to be able to support LDAP in it's entirety to cater for the bank's requirements which was already discussed and articulated in the Webex meeting with the IBM Developer Team last 14 December 2020. Fyi, IBM Case TS004663814 has additional information which you may find helpful. On AIX we must be able to add LDAP users to local groups in order for the programme to progress further. It's a functionality that is currently unsupported in AIX and is not part of the code, hence, the main reason for this RFE to be raised.

    Thanks a lot.

The support team is still clarifying with the customer whether they are using NIS netgroup or something else.

If the customer is referring to NIS netgroup, since NIS is an old authentication method, is very insecure and considered obsolete. It's unlikely AIX will extend the domainless group feature to support NIS netgroup.
