Have AIX fibre channel allow storage target ports to leave Fabric and return with new FC_ID (same WWN) for Disaster Recovery

In NetApp's SAN storage Cluster Mode Disaster Recovery solution, two distinct clusters are active at separate sites. When one cluster or site goes down, the cluster at the other site can load it's replicated configuration and data and continue to survive applications.

The effect at the AIX client is an appearance of storage target ports leaving the fabric and the time of the cluster or site going down, and returning to the fabric up to 120 seconds later, at the remote site, with the same WWNs. Since the fabric spans across the sites, the storage target ports will re-enter the fabric with new FC-IDs. (Note, AIX clients have Fast Fail and Dynamic Tracking enabled.)

Currently, AIX will fail the storage devices within approximately 15 seconds of the target ports leaving the fabric, by design.

Other operating systems have a mechanism to hold on the devices in these cases where all paths to the devices are in a failed state. (Linux calls this an All Paths Down. )

It is understood that most fault scenarios require quick response a the clients, which is why the low timeout is in place. This RFE is asking for special handling for cases where all storage paths are lost.

IBM has evaluated the priority of this enhancement proposal relative to other future product content and determined that this RFE will not be pursued for a future product release

.we do not, at this time, support making AIX RFEs public. We have received a number of comments on the subject of public AIX RFEs are are reviewing the matter internally.
