AIX file defragmentation

AIX file fragmentation reduces the performance and the only way to recover is to backup and restore the data.
Defrags command does not defragment files and is not helpful in this situation.

This feature is available in AIX 7.2 Technology Level (TL) 2
The defragfs command attempts to coalesce free space in the file system in order to increase the file system's contiguous free space. A new option "-f" is added to also coalesce internal fragmentation of all files in the file system.

The existing defragfs command only attempts to coalesce free space in the file system. It does not address internal fragmentation in files. Adding the ability to reorganize files to optimize for i/o performance is a worthwhile goal and it will be considered for implementation in a future release. The alternative suggestion of setting extent size will also be studied. Implementation of any change is contingent on availability of resources--this is not a commitment to deliver the function.
