AIX tcp_keepidle default for keep alive packets

Hi IBM,

The default setting for tcp_keepidle is 14400. This equals 2 hours between keep alive packets for idle connections. Most firewalls default to 1 hour before they terminate idle connections.

Would you consider reducing the tcp_keepidle to 1800 which would then send keep alive packets every 30 minutes on idle connections.

While changing the defaults may help one customer, other customers may well be surprised if we change the default value of tcp_keepidle. As stated before, use

    no -po tcp_keepidle=7200

to set the initial idle timeout to 2 hours (7200 half-seconds)

    Hi IBM,

Apologies for the typo, yes 1800 is in fact 15 minutes.
As long as the new default is less than 1 hour it should fix the issue where firewalls timeout connections after 1 hour.
Perhaps a new default setting of 3600 to make it 30 minutes between keep alives would be better.

You can change "tcp_keepidle" using the "no" command:

    # no -po tcp_keepidle=1800

(which is 15 minutes, not 30, since these are half-seconds)
