SMB (CIFS)

We have been using CIFS (SMB) over a decade. We have been told by IBM that the CIFS driver is version 0.12 and there is no ETA to update to the driver to new version. CIFS is heavily used at the Bank. We have many scripts, processes and applications rely on CIFS mount points. Recent upgrade to Windows 2012 and making use of the shares on Windows 2012 with AIX CIFS has forced our Windows Support Team to disable SMB signing. This change was mandated by IBM and MIcrosoft was not inclined to suggest the change however. In order to get AIX CIFS to work we had to disable SMB signing. Had AIX run the latest version of SMB, this change would not have to happen. What would take IBM to work on the new version of CIFS? We really need up to date version of CIFS.

AIX currently support SMB 3.0.2 Client version. Please look for "Server Message Block (SMB) client file system" section.

This is a major issue because Azure only supports SMBv3, and CIFS shares from Azure are needed to protect/offsite things like Spectrum Protect database backups, and other files.

Also, many Windows servers, even prior to 2016, are disabling SMBv1.

AIX has SAMBA 4 in the yum repository, but no mount helper there.

The only CIFS mount helper is in the base OS, and it has not changed substantially in more than a decade.

This is a major customer sat issue and putting a multi-million dollar IBM migration at risk.
