IBM Power Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

AIX Live Kernel Update - make mhdisk (mirrored rootvg) optional rather than mandatory

One of the impediments to using AIX Live Update is the number of disks required to achieve it, particularly when performing subsequent updates between reboots. This adds up when you are talking about hundreds of LPARs being managed.

Currently, there is a mandatory mirror disk "mhdisk" required in the lvupdate.data file. When applying service packs, or simply using "geninstall -k" after updating locally, the "mhdisk" mirror copy is a mirror taken after the data is updated - which is useless as a backout point, as it is taken after the change.

The IBM documentation itself https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/en/ssw_aix_72/install/lvupdate_configuration.html recommends an additional alt_disk_copy performed on to a different disk in addition to the "mhdisk" copy when applying SP updates or when using "geninstall -k" after local updates.

My proposal is to make the "mhdisk" copy optional - still able to be specified for ifix installs as the backout point, but able to be skipped for SP updates, where a manual alt_disk_copy is required anyway prior to the work.

there are no plans to address this aspect of the LKU design in a future release of AIX
