Granular API Token Management in CMC

The current IBM Cloud Management Console (CMC) API token system provides limited control over access permissions. We propose enhancing the token management capabilities to provide greater flexibility and security:

  • Multiple API Tokens: Allow users to create multiple API tokens, each with its own set of permissions. This enables the principle of least privilege, where different applications or users only have the access they need.

  • Read-Only vs. Read/Write Permissions: Provide the ability to create tokens with read-only access, restricting them from making changes to CMC configuration. This is crucial for monitoring and reporting tools that only need to retrieve data.

  • IP Address Restrictions: Allow administrators to restrict API token usage to specific IP addresses or IP ranges. This adds an extra layer of security, preventing unauthorized access even if a token is compromised.

  • Expiration Dates: Implement optional expiration dates for API tokens. This forces regular token rotation, improving security.

  • Token Scoping: Ability to scope tokens to specific resources or services within CMC. (This is a more advanced feature, and might be a separate Idea). For example, a token might only have access to a specific set of virtual machines.
