Upgrading OS on HMC can require root access

I just completed an OS upgrade to 2 HMCs. Both were at V8R840. The upgrade path was supplied by IBM. At the first attempt to upgrade from V8R840 to V8R860, the ISO file load failed with an "access denied" error. I tried to download from a local ftp/NIM server. I verified the ftp was functional by logging in with my user name and password via ftp and that was successful. I tried installing/upgrading using the ISO file locally in the /home/hscroot directory. I got the same "access denied" error. I tried to install/upgrade from the GUI and still got the same "access denied" error. I obtained PESH passwords from IBM and was able to mount /hmcdump and /hmcboot then move the appropriate network files into those file systems, change to the alternate boot method and then reboot the HMC. The same exact error happened when trying to upgrade those same HMCs from the V8R860 to V8R870. I again had to obtain PESH passwords in order to mount /hmcdump and /hmcboot. The hscroot user account should have the capability to manually mount those 2 file systems and move the network files into those file systems without having to open a case with IBM to obtain PESH passwords.

Support for fetching images from HMC local hard disk via getupgfiles command is added in HMC V9 R1 M930.

    Hi,

As per the mail discussion, the request is to add an option to getupgfiles to copy the upgrade files from the HMC local hard disk. The enhancement is being planned for an upcoming release.

    Thanks.

What command are you using to upgrade? If not getupgfiles, can you try that?
