HMC Enhanced Interface, Allow DLPAR of resource that is owned by another LPAR where that LPAR is not active

In the Enhanced HMC Interface, you cannot add an adaptor that is owned by another LPAR, even when that LPAR is not activated.

This is possible in both Classic and Command-Line Interfaces.

This is particularly important when sharing SAS or Fibre adaptors between LPARs to connect a tape device.

The CEAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a HIGH priority requirement that is important to address.

This limitation was introduced by the Enhanced GUI and whilst niche has profound effects and limitations for IBM i users as it can result in a resource that should be shared be locked to an unused partition.

Background: The COMMON Europe Advisory Council (CEAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CEAC has a crucial role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community and has therefore reviewed your RFE.

To find out how CEAC help to shape the future of IBM i, see CEAC @ ibm.biz/BdYSYj and the article "The Five Hottest IBM i RFEs Of The Quarter" at ibm.biz/BdYSZT

You can navigate to the Partition -> Physical IO , then select the adapter and remove it , like you can do when the partition is active. We will keep this RFE to track the option of showing "IO assigned to inactive lpars" as part of our long term roadmap.

    Hi IBM_Systems_Developer

Thanks for your update, perhaps you could point both me (and the IBM Support team) to the documentation that explains how the "Physical IO can be removed from the partition even when the partition is inactive from the UI" as neither of us could figure it out.

Hence the creation of this RFE. The IBM Support case number is listed, so you can see the details.

    Best wishes. Steve

    Hi,

In the below case, Physical IO can be removed from the partition even when the partition is inactive from the UI. We will look at adding an additional option to list the physical IO assigned to inactive lpars.

    Thanks.
