Adding virtual storage to an inactive LPAR

We are working with shadow LPAR definitions for roleswap between two Power systems. We can add a new LUN per vSCSI to the running LPAR without problems with the HMC - PowerVM - virtual storage dialogue.
But we are not able to add a LUN to the sleeping shadow LPAR, the add virtual storage ends with REST0269 The Operation failed on the Partition, the current state of the Partition does not support this operation.

Because we could not activate the shadow LPAR while production is running (using the same set of LUNs) we are not able to add the LUN to the backup LPAR. So we have to use the old methods (add vSCSI host adapter in VIOS by DLPAR, add vSCSI Client adapter in LPAR Profile, create LUN Mapping in VIOS to the matching vhost). This is difficult for a client who is normally using the add virtual storage GUI.

The add virtual storage wizard should recognize that the client LPAR isn't running and therefore should do the needed changes in the profile of the client LPAR and the other needed changes in VIOS dynamic by DLPAR.

    Hi Harald,

Virtual Storage attach is allowed even if the lpar is not activated, as long as the profile is applied once and the resource configuration is in a bootable state. From the screen shot attached, looks like the resource configuration might not be in bootable state and hence the error. You can do a apply profile (chsyscfg -r lpar -m -o apply -p -n ) and then try the virtual storage attach with the partition in shutdown state. Please let us know if that resolves the error.

    Thanks.
