IBM Power Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Allow VIOS/Novalink as proxy for RMC connection (auto-discovery?)

In our case the HMC does not have an RMC connection to the AIX and Linux LPARs due to our networking setup; it DOES have an RMC connection to the Virtual I/O Servers, which in turn have an RMC connection to Novalink, which acts as the managing instance for our POWER servers (in combination with PowerVC).
Certain features nowadays rely on a proper RMC connection between the HMC and the LPARs running, e.g. for concurrent firmware updates. Possibly more RMC uses pop-up when additional "zero-planned downtime" features are implemented.

It would be very advantageous if the HMC could "forward" the RMC communication to the LPARs (and back when needed) across the Virtual I/O server and/or Novalink, depending on which of those has an active RMC connection. The HMC can find out which Novalink partitions and VIO servers there are, and which one(s) have an active RMC link. Any auto-discovery of the possibilities would provide additional flexibility and ease-of-use. It would allow customers with network-limitations to still use concurrent firmware update and/or other (new) features requiring RMC.
