This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Allow qualified values within Dim( ) keyword in ILE RPG

In moving towards more modular development, we're attempting to move our program set up values to a data structure however the DIM keyword doesn't allow qualified variable names.

Use Case:

Define a data structure:
SetupEntries Ds Inz Qualified
MaxEntries 5S 0 Inz( 40 )

OutColumns Ds Dim( SetupEntries.MaxEntries )

RPG does not allow any variable name to be coded in the DIM keyword. The parameter for DIM must be a constant.

If the purpose for using a qualified subfield is to allow the dimension of the array to be changed at runtime, there is another RFE related to that: https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/rfe/execute?use_case=viewRfe&CR_ID=90712. You can your vote to that RFE, and add a comment about your specific needs related.

However, if your goal is just to set the dimension of the array according to the initialization value of the subfield, then define a named constant and use it for both the DIM keyword and the data structure subfield.

    MAX_ENTRIES C 40

    SetupEntries Ds Inz Qualified
    MaxEntries 5S 0 Inz( MAX_ENTRIES )

    OutColumns Ds Dim( MAX_ENTRIES )
