The introduction of PTF SI62604 (which gives CRTRPGMOD the 'TGTCCSID' keyword and so allows RPG and SQLRPG modules to be compiled from Unicode stream files) now allows users to convert their source code to UTF-8 and store them as stream files in the IFS (and perform version control with Git). RPG, SQLRPG, and C modules all compile fine. However, SQLC modules fail, with error message SQL8018: CCSID 1208 not supported by SQL.
In other words, the C and RPG compilers support UTF-8, the SQLRPG precompiler supports UTF-8, but the SQLC precompiler does not. It would be helpful if the SQLC precompiler supported UTF-8.
Source code is stored as stream files in the IFS, encoded in UTF-8 so as to preserve all special symbols. Version control is managed with Git. Objects are created by compiling from stream file for those object types that support this, and by using the open source tool CRTFRMSTMF for those object types that don't (yet), like CL.

We implemented this in IBM i 7.3 and 7.4. The code is available via the latest Db2 PTF Group.

The CAAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a high priority requirement that is important to be addressed. For consistency, SQLC precompiler should also have this support. For those using SQLC, this is a critical need.
