IBM Power Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Update bookmarks as source changes

It appears that bookmarks are stored as simply line numbers of a source file. As source lines are added, deleted, and moved, these bookmark line numbers are not updated. Consequently, after a few source edits, bookmarks become largely useless.

Use Case:

Properties for a Marker (type Bookmark):
Description: FXA001CP Messages
On element: FXA001CP.SQLRPGLE
In folder: RemoteSystemsTempFiles/nnn...nnn/QSYS.LIB/JAGLIB.LIB/QCPYLESRC.FILE
Location: line 363

Insert 123 lines above this bookmark on line 363. Properties of the bookmark retain the value "Location: line 363", now pointing far above the source content originally bookmarked (now on line 486).

Due to processing by IBM, this request was reassigned to have the following updated attributes:
Brand - Servers and Systems Software
    Product family - Programming Languages
Product - Developer for Power Systems

For recording keeping, the previous attributes were:
    Brand - Rational
Product family - Design & development
Product - Developer for Power Systems

Thank you for taking the time to suggest this enhancement to our product. Many of our product enhancements result from feedback from our customers, so your input is always very important to us.
However, this appears to be behaving as you requested already. After adding/removing/moving lines, the bookmarks remain associated with the line that they were previously.
If you have a case where it does not, it is possible that there is a defect, please open a PMR for us to investigate your issue.

This RFE is consistent with our strategy and product roadmap and IBM is continuing to evaluate.

Bookmarks are updated and go to the right location even when lines above are inserted or deleted. In the bookmark view, the line number is not updated before you save, but it still goes to the correct line. I just tried it in version 9.0.0.1 but remember seeing correct behavior in previous versions.
