This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).
We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:
Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,
Post an idea.
Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.
Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

We have the ability to execute SQL statements directly in RPGLE code, including the use of substitution values.
Please add the ability to directly execute CL statements in RPGLE as well, including the ability to substitute values into the CL statements.
This would effectively eliminate the need for QCMDEXC in RPGLE code and make all use of CL in RPGLE vastly more readable and maintainable.
If I need to create a duplicate file object in QTEMP I would utilize a compiler directive that says the following statements are CL statements. Then I would enter in the CRTDUPOBJ CL command passing a value for the from library (:fromLib) and close the CL code section with another compiler directive.
All CL commands should be open to this process.

IBM does not intend to provide a solution to this request at this time, so it is being closed.
@JMarkMurphy, your idea about modifying the monitor block to trap messages as well as RPG status codes should probably be a separate RFE, since the need for that goes beyond this idea of being able to invoke CL commands directly.
Due to processing by IBM, this request was reassigned to have the following updated attributes:
Brand - Servers and Systems Software
Product family - Power Systems
Product - IBM i
Component - Languages - RPG
Operating system - IBM i
Source - Other
For recording keeping, the previous attributes were:
Brand - Servers and Systems Software
Product family - Programming Languages
Product - Developer for Power Systems
Component - RPG/COBOL Development Tools
Operating system - IBM i
Source - Other
In a way what you are describing is a CLLE sub-procedure in a service program which can be created right now, but I can see a case for a single inline CL command, which is what QCMDEXEC is used for. I can see an EXEC CMD witch could be implemented similarly to EXEC SQL, maybe even as another precompiler. But it would be nice if there was a way to monitor for any resulting exception messages thrown by the command. Maybe the monitor block could be modified to trap escape and notify messages.
