RPG update overwriting identity column

An RPGLE UPDATE statement will overwrite the value of an identity column. This results in bogus values in the DB.

Example column:
"ID" INTEGER GENERATED ALWAYS AS IDENTITY (
START WITH 1 INCREMENT BY 1
NO MINVALUE NO MAXVALUE
NO CYCLE NO ORDER
CACHE 20 )

Use Case:

RPGLE UPDATE should either not change the identity column, or should raise an error when you try.

IBM believes that the request described has been solved and has been available since identity columns were introduced. There are two ways to define a generated column. As mentioned in the prior comment, defining the identity column as GENERATED BY DEFAULT allows RPG to update an identity column. GENERATED ALWAYS will ignore any update of the column by RPG, letting the database maintain the column value. If this is not the behavior you are seeing, please open a ticket through service.

If your identity column is defined as GENERATED BY DEFAULT, RPG will be able to update and insert values into an identity column, just like SQL statements. If you define the identity column as GENERATED ALWAYS, RPG will allow an update but the identity column will not be updated. RPG will allow an insert, but the value used for the inserted row will be the next cached or generated value.
