ASP Encryption Enablement for ASP 1 (*SYSBAS)

The current IBM i Option to support data encryption at rest SS1 Option 45 Encrypted ASP Enablement does not support encryption of ASP 1 *SYSBAS

Use Case:

At the moment this existing SS1 option does not allow for the complete encryption of a system and the only way this can be done is to use External Storage.

As vital information about a system is stored in ASP 1 then is seems reasonable that they should be encrypted at rest too.

IBM will use this request as input to planning but no commitment is made or implied. This request will be updated in the future if IBM implements it. IBM will use votes and comments from others in the community to help prioritize this request.

The COMMON Europe Advisory Council (CEAC) has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a high priority requirement that is important to address.

Many new regulatory requirements such as GDPR requires ALL data to be encrypted at rest and we need IBM i to offer this for all its disk & data.

Background: The CEAC members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CEAC has a crucial role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community and has therefore reviewed your RFE.

To find out how CEAC help to shape the future of IBM i, see CEAC @ ibm.biz/BdYSYj and the article "The Five Hottest IBM i RFEs Of The Quarter" at ibm.biz/BdYSZT

The general requirement for new ways of encrypting data at rest is under consideration. *SYSBAS would never be encrypted in its entirety like an iASP because it contains the operating system and application *PGM/*SRVPGM executables

The CAAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a high priority requirement that is important to be addressed. Lowest cost SAN solution is a Storwize V5000, 5020 model, which is a rather cost for smaller customers. A more affordable solution is needed.

Here is a pointer to some new New York State regulations that indicate there will be greater need for even small P05 customers to need to encrypt: https://www.dfs.ny.gov/legal/regulations/adoptions/dfsrf500txt.pdf
