IBM Power Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Add "WITH NC"for commands CREATE TABLE/DROP TABLE , CREATE INDEX/DROP INDEX

DB2/400 supports WITH NC hint for Insert/Update/Delete commands . It allows to execute SQL statements out of SQL transaction and without DB2/400 journaling.
In the past data definition command like CREATE TABLE / CREATE INDEX were executed out of the SQL transaction and having WITH NC hint for Insert/Update/Delete was enough
for executing temporary I/O operations in the QTEMP library.

IBM has changed the behaviour of DB2/400 in V7R3. We can see that data definition commands like CREATE TABLE/DROP TABLE , CREATE INDEX/DROP TABLE are included into the SQL transaction in the QTEMP library . This is the reason why our software (Max application) is facing problems after OS upgrade in March 2018.

Considering the mentioned above behavior change in DB2/400 , we need to have WITH NC hint for the data definition commands CREATE TABLE/DROP TABLE , CREATE INDEX/DROP INDEX.

Use Case:

It will allow to utilize QTEMP library for temporary selections and I/O operations without interfering I/O transactions in the real DB libraries.

Please check PMR 01475,650,706 for more details.

IBM does not intend to provide a solution to this request at this time, so it is being closed. While we agree with the request, the IBM i database team has many other higher priority enhancements to deliver, so this request is not likely to be implemented anytime soon.

An alternate coding approach to keep the DDL changes from being included in a transaction is demonstrated in this gist:

The CAAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a high priority requirement that is important to be addressed. Compatibility with similar IBM i commands is always desirable.

Background: The COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CAAC has a key role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community, and has therefore reviewed your RFE.
