SQL Add ANCHOR DATA To (%TYPE) functionality

The lack of support for the %TYPE or ANCHOR DATA TO for data declarations affects our ability to port databases that use this functionality.

We are looking at porting a Postgres based application to IBM i and have a large number of functions that use the %TYPE function when declaring the variables. We have found an IBM porting guide which states that as part of the porting activity we should change the %TYPE definitions to use ANCHOR DATA TO definition. However while this is available on IBM DB2 9.8 for Windows and Linux it is not available for IBM i.

We could go through and define the variable by looking up the table.column definition but that will take a long time and is not providing the same functionality as the original Database.

Use Case:

We are looking to port a large application from Linux to IBM i. This application uses the %TYPE declaration for a lot of the functions (Over 100 to review). This is the first application we are looking to port but we have seen many others that could be candidates for porting in the future.

IBM will use this request as input to planning but no commitment is made or implied. This request will be updated in the future if IBM implements it.

The CAAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a medium priority requirement that should be addressed. Attracting new workloads to IBM i would be a good thing.

Background: The COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CAAC has a key role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community, and has therefore reviewed your RFE.
