IBM Power Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

ACS Printer Output add an option to specify a different encoding when downloading as text (.txt).

Access for Windows downloads spool files in different encoding than ACS. ACS only produces UTF-8

Use Case:

Download spool file reports for relay to vendor. Vendor does not support UTF-8 with current interface.

Thank you for submitting your Request For Enhancement. We understand the value of this RFE, but higher priority items have taken precedence. We are keeping this on our list for consideration in the near future.

IBM understands this request and will consider it for a future code update, though no commitment is made or implied.

This requirement is for spool file delivery to a single vendor in UTF-16. Changing the properties within ACS Config would impact all downloads. Is this assumption correct? Changing configs at the user level is not a viable solution. Ability to alter ACS config is restricted to limit functionality. The preferred solution would be ability to select additional encoding at the individual download level.

There is already a solution for this using a property which will enable Host Print Transform (HPT) for ACS printer output. Set the following property in AcsConfig.properties:
    com.ibm.iaccess.AlternativeTxtSplf=true
That will cause ACS printer output to use the HPT EBCDIC to ASCII conversion tables defined by default at /QSYS.LIB/QWPDEFAULT.WSCST. The default IBM i conversions are defined here:
    https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/ssw_ibm_i_74/rzalu/rbaqbmst226.htm
If using the system default conversions are not sufficient and you would like to customize your own *WSCST, we could provide an option for you to specify the location of your own customized *WSCST object.

If neither of these solutions will suffice, please provide us with additional details: CCSIDs, target code pages, and why neither of the above solutions will suffice.

The CAAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a high priority requirement that is important to be addressed. Usability is an important feature for ACS to support, as well as compatibility with diverse targets.

Background: The COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CAAC has a key role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community, and has therefore reviewed your RFE.

IBM has received this requirement and is evaluating it. A response will be provided when evaluation is complete.
