DCM SAN update

When creating a new Certificate in the Digital Certificate Manager, you are not allowed to enter just the DNS name, you must enter the FQDN, which is typically used as the Common Name as well. Please allow adding of the DNS name to the Subject Alternative Name field

Use Case:

When going to Navigator for i using https://systemname:2005 modern browser standards reject the site as secure because the DNS name is not located in the SAN field of the certificate.

This request was previously declined, this update is to set the correct external state for the RFE.

The request for DCM to support creating certificates and certificate requests with multiple Subject Alternative Names (SAN) has been a very popular request which resulted in a few different RFEs requesting this enhancement. This request might still get done in the future so simply rejecting it is not appropriate. It is therefore being deferred since it cannot be completed at this time.

IBM has previously requested more clarifying information. Because the additional information was not provided within 30 days, the request has been closed.

I would like some clarification on what is expected for the DCM application to allow adding a DNS name into the subject alternative name field.

A fully qualified domain name is something like: www.ibm.com which specifies the top-level domain (com), the assigned domain name (ibm), and the hostname (www). DCM does not prevent you from entering in just the hostname like "MyServer" or a generic name such as "*.ibm.com". But when a browser needs to validate that the certificate is correctly associated with the name of the server that is presenting that certificate, it does need to match for the browser to trust it.

Is the request in RFE asking for DCM to retrieve the fully qualified domain name and place it into the subject alternative name automatically when you are only specifying a host name? Or if you just put "ibm.com" should DCM change that to the "*.ibm.com" generic name? I suspect most people will find overriding data that was specified in the SAN fields to be an undesirable action.

IBM will use this request as input to planning but no commitment is made or implied. This request will be updated in the future if IBM implements it. IBM will use votes and comments from others in the community to help prioritize this request.

No they do not. Modern Browsers require the SANs field to include the Fully qualified domain name (which was added in those PTFs) but it is also required to have the DNS name in the SANs field as well.

Would also be nice to remove the requirement to have a minimum of 3 characters for State/Province field. What US states us 3 letter abbreviations? But that is a "nice to have feature request"

PTFs related to adding Subject Alternative Name support to DCM were release prior to this request but without much publicity. DCM had the SAN field support for Local CA issued certificates, but these PTFs added the same support when creating a certificate signing request to be issued by some other CA.

    IBM i 7.2:
SI65740 OSP-DCM PROVIDE SAN FIELDS ON CERTIFICATE REQUEST (latest supersede = SI66302)
SI65739 OSP-DCM PROVIDE SAN FIELDS ON CERTIFICATE REQUEST (latest supersede = SI69873)

    IBM i 7.3:
SI65751 OSP-DCM PROVIDE SAN FIELDS ON CERTIFICATE REQUEST (latest supersede = SI66088)
SI65752 OSP-DCM PROVIDE SAN FIELDS ON CERTIFICATE REQUEST (latest supersede = SI69860)

Do these PTFs provide the requested functionality?
