IBM Power Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Large XML File Support for RPG

Our company processes XML files larger than 2GB on a regular basis, and we are currently unable to (easily) use RPG to parse these files beyond the 2147483408 character limit.

Use Case:

Enabling the RPG XML-SAX or XML-INTO operation codes to handle XML files beyond the existing ~2GB limitation would enable our developers to use RPG to process some of the larger XML files we receive from outside agencies versus having to resort to the use of Java or other third-party tools.

The CAAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a medium priority requirement that should be addressed. Although most folks won't hit this limit, it should be increased to make it possible to handle larger files for those who have the need.

Background: The COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CAAC has a key role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community, and has therefore reviewed your RFE.

IBM will use this request as input to planning but no commitment is made or implied. This request will be updated in the future if IBM implements it. IBM will use votes and comments from others in the community to help prioritize this request.

I don't understand why that limit applies when using XML-INTO with the %HANDLER() option, especially in conjugation with the path= option; thus processing by repeated subsets of data in just a given section of the document .

Obviously, the parser isn't trying to read the document in its entirety, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to successfully process any of it. Seems like it must be reading/parsing in chunks, but instead of clearing after each chunk, it's saving it in memory.

Again, this doesn't make sense when using XML-INTO with the %HANDLER() option in conjugation with the path= option.

IBM has received the requirement and is evaluating it. IBM will provide a response after evaluation is complete.
