IBM i Warning Message when SLKM server not available

Currently, if a backup device is using Hardware Encryption using an SKLM server to provide the keys and the network connection to SKLM servers is not available, the backup device signal a general hardware configuration issue, not that the SKLM server is unavailable.

Use Case:

This reduces diagnosis time and allows for proactive monitoring and management of backup devices. Rather than waiting till a backup was requested and getting a failure message.

Message CPP6315 has always been sent to the QSYSOPR message queue when an encryption error occurs. The message text is the following:

Cause . . . . . : The tape device has reported an encryption error while
attempting to use the mounted cartridge. The most likely cause is a
configuration problem with the key manager server. There may also be a
hardware problem with the key manager server.
    Recovery . . . :
Press F14 to work with the problem.

The CAAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM revisit this answer. The CAAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a medium priority requirement that should still be addressed. The tape devices are passive devices and won't generate an error message like this. BRMS says just "tape or media not available". Perhaps this should be re-routed to get some help from the OS in generating the error indication?

Background: The COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CAAC has a key role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community, and has therefore reviewed your RFE.

The BRMS team does not intend to provide a solution to this request at this time. BRMS is not able to monitor the Library Managed Encryption servers so any alerts would need to come from the tape library manager. This will be closed.
