IBM i IWS HTTP PATCH Support

IBM i IWS (Integrated Web Services Server) currently supports HTTP request methods GET, PUT, DELETE, POST but there is no support for PATCH method. Unlike PUT method, PATCH method allows client to send only modified resource information instead of complete resource & significantly reduce the size of payload. HTTP PATCH method was added in year 2010 based on IETF RFC 5789

Use Case:

System: Customer maintenance
Actor: Customer

Use cases for the system: Modify customer data

Scenario: Customer resource has several data set such as profile, address, contact, identification information and each contains several attributes. In most cases update will be required only to one or few attributes (like cellphone number, email address, home phone number, home address line 1...) using PUT method increases the size of payload and affects performance as complete resource has to be replaced. Support for HTTP PATCH will allow client to send only modified attributes reducing the size of payload and improve the performance

    Hi Team,

We also have the same requirement for IWS. Can we have this PATCH Method included in the future release?

IBM agrees with the request and a solution appears to be desirable and feasible. IBM intends to provide a solution. However, IBM's plans may change and no commitment is made that a solution will be provided.
