Please extend the length of ALIAS in a Physical File

Please extend the length of the ALIAS field in physical files.

Use Case:

Whilst I appreciate that DDS is not really supported from future development, there is a need to make some limited improvements.

In today's times, interfaces with other internal and external systems, the ALIAS has become a necessary friend especially where external applications using tools/interfaces such as SQL are a reality.

I have recently had to provide new exports to new applications where the column names are predefined and some of these column names exceed 30 characters.

Solution already exists, and there should be no further enhancements to DDS, as previously stated by IBM. Converting a physical file to an SQL table would allow the use of longer ALIAS names

The CAAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM not implement this request. Solution already exists, and there should be no further enhancements to DDS, as previously stated by IBM. Converting a physical file to an SQL table would allow the use of longer ALIAS names.

Background: The COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CAAC has a key role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community, and has therefore reviewed your RFE.

I'm sorry but IBM has stated on MANY occasions that enhancements to DDS is done. If you want longer alias names you should convert the table to SQL and be done with it. Quite frankly it's a simple thing to do, the table stays exactly the same. Can you can have very long Alias names. There is NO REASON at this point to not move to SQL based tables, views and indexes. In fact I feel that any enhancement to DDS only enhances the perception that our platform is old and outdated. It's time to move on.
