UDTF returning dynamic resultset

Today stored procedures can return dynamic result sets. It will be appreciated if UDTF could have the same feature. Today you can only return a TABLE, you need however to define each column even though a cursor will contain the required information.


Use Case:

Using a the construction like:

select * from table myUDTF (parm1=>1234) a

You can join, filter, order group etc. these data into a lateral dataset. However it only support static column definitions.

So this will be cool but not allowed to day:

    IBM will use this request as input to planning but no commitment is made or implied. This request will be updated in the future if IBM implements it.

    The CAAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a high priority requirement that is important to be addressed. This is a gap that should be closed -- it would be extremely beneficial to the IBM i community.

    Background: The COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CAAC has a key role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community, and has therefore reviewed your RFE.

    The COMMON Europe Advisory Council (CEAC) has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a high priority requirement that is important to address.

    Defining UDTF and stored procedures is crucial for modernisation since they can be used as the first step in "old RPG" applications and at the same time be used as a data provider for node.js, python, java etc. brining the database modernisation process forward. It will make it easier to adapt.

    Background: The CEAC members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CEAC has a crucial role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community and has therefore reviewed your RFE.
