Automated Plan Cache Management

Currently the option is available to delete a plan from the Plan Cache. IBM i ACS SQL Performance Center allows you to look at the SQL statement currently in the Plan Cache and allows you to delete a Plan. We would like to have the option to do this in an automated way.

Use Case:

We have customers who do not IPL regularly and for this reason their Plan Cache is old. When the an application change or databases are deleted from the system. For this we would like to have the option to delete Plan from the Plan Cache in an automated way.The only option available now is to delete them manually one by one.

    Dear IBM_Systems_Developer,

Unfortunately the solution you suggest is a all or nothing thing.

I do not want to clear all the complete Plan Cache, I only want to delete the part of which I am sure it is not going to reused again. The part of the plan cache concerning the rest of the database I want to keep it.

Image the following scenario described below:

(this is from a customer case we encountered today)

We have a customer who is running JDE on his production LPAR.
He is also running a training database of his system.
That database is as large as the production database of JDE.
Recently the PTF's have been upgraded and an IPL is not planned for the next two months.
Last Friday the decision was made to move the training database to another LPAR.
When that other LPAR is up and running for the training database, the training database will be deleted for the production LPAR.

Using the option you suggested it will clear the complete Plan Cache including the plan for the JDE production database.

In this situation the option to delete all the plans concerning the training database on the production LPAR would make sense. Especially because of the fact that this production LPAR is running out of disk space and the 7 % Plan Cache rule does not allow the Plan Cache to grow much when set to automated. We can overrule that, but currently the hit ratio is high enough.
Apart from that the high score of a plan in Plan Cache might cause a plan for the training database to be kept in the Plan Cache, while a plan for the production database is removed from the Plan Cache.

According to the information I found in the link you provided, that solution deletes all plans from the Plan Cache including the MTIs.
For that reason I think what I am asking for is not delivered yet ;-)

Db2 for i includes a service for this topic.
If you want to discard the current SQL Plan Cache without IPL'ing, call the CLEAR_PLAN_CACHE procedure.

The CEAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a HIGH priority requirement that is important to address. Plan cache storage is limited and by being to able to automate the deletion of certain plans, based on criteria preferable sql service, can help to improve SQL performance.

Background: The COMMON Europe Advisory Council (CEAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CEAC has a crucial role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community and has therefore reviewed your RFE.

To find out how CEAC help to shape the future of IBM i, see CEAC @ ibm.biz/BdYSYj and the article "The Five Hottest IBM i RFEs Of The Quarter" at ibm.biz/BdYSZT
