IBM Power Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

Preserve case sensitivity of identifiers for COBOL web services

When creating webservices currently COBOL does not have a way preserve the case of identifier names used in the COBOL program when generating PCML.

Use Case:

When interacting with Nadir Amra from IBM, amra@us.ibm.com, whilst trying to solve a problem we were facing when creating a Cobol webservice whose parameters come in mixed case we were unable to compile the program so that the PCML that is generated preserves the case in which the parameters are defined. It seems RPG has an option DCLCASE to compile as follows:CTL-OPT PGMINFO(*PCML:*MODULE:*DCLCASE) that preserves the case. This sort of option would be the one that we are looking to have.

IBM believes that the solution for the idea described is available. PCML can be generated with mixed case identifier names by specifying the new NOMONOCASE value for the PGMINFO option on the PROCESS statement. This functionality is added by 7.4 PTF SI77581 and 7.5 PTF SI79810. The NOMONOCASE value can be specified for the PGMINFO option after the PCML value with or without the MODULE value, allowing a maximum of three values to be specified as follows: PGMINFO(PCML MODULE NOMONOCASE).

The CAAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a high priority requirement that is important to be addressed. For those who use COBOL, this is high impact, for moving their applications to the web.

Background: The COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CAAC has a key role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community, and has therefore reviewed your RFE.

For more information about CAAC, see www.common.org/caac

For more details about CAAC's role with RFEs, see http://www.ibmsystemsmag.com/Blogs/i-Can/May-2017/COMMON-Americas-Advisory-Council-%28CAAC%29-and-RFEs/
