IBM Power Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Local scoped functions and procedures in UDTF and stored procedures

For structural reasons you sometime need to encapsulate logic as locally scoped functions and procedure when you create UDTF and stored procedures - just like you would do in any other programing language. However SQL-PL does not allow that in the IBM i implementation.

By nature local scoped functions / procedures will be limited to the SQL language itself.

Local scoped functions / procedure should have higher precedence the normal external UDTF/procedures.

Use Case:

Here I showcase a simple construction of a local scope function called abc

create or replace function test_Local_scoped_function ()
returns int
begin

declare function abc () returns int
begin
return 123;
end abc;

return abc();

end;

    IBM will use this request as input to planning but no commitment is made or implied. This request will be updated in the future if IBM implements it.

    This request aligns with support of SQL Modules,as implemented by Db2 LUW.

    The CAAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a high priority requirement that is important to be addressed. The use of locally scoped functions allows better use and control of variables and parameters in the body of UDTFs and procedures.

    The COMMON Europe Advisory Council (CEAC) has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a HIGH priority requirement that is important to address.

    Today's users need a way to use modern structures to make user-defined table functions and stored procedures which is available with DB such as Oracle and SQL server etc. This RFE will help to fill that gap.

CEAC has a crucial role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community and has therefore reviewed your RFE.
