IBM Power Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

Update RLA to check external DS RCDFMT, not File Name

When using Record Level Access (RLA) with an externally described data structure, RPG compiler throws a RNF7595 if the file used to define the data structure has a different name than the file being accessed. The downside of this is that different data structures have to be defined for the physical and every logical defined over it, even if they all have the exact same record format.

Use Case:

Physical - TestIOP:
R TESTIOR TEXT('TEST FILE')

TIKEY 3A COLHDG('Key' 'Field')
TIDATA 30A COLHDG('Data')

Logical - TestIOL:
R TESTIOR PFILE(TESTIOP)

K TIKEY

RPG:
DCL-F TestIOL DISK KEYED;

DCL-DS IOData EXT EXTNAME('TESTIOP': 'TESTIOR': *ALL) END-DS;

CHAIN '123' TestIOL IOData;

    IBM does not intend to provide a solution to this request at this time, so it is being closed.

    While the record formats for some logical files are identical to the physical files, this is not always the case.

    It would be very complex for the compiler to determine that the record format used to define a data structure was both related-to and identical-to the record format for the I/O operation. At this time, implementing this enhancement would require too much development resource.
