Software is starting to increasingly use the timer family of functions such as timer_create. These allow for accurate timing that manual timekeeping wouldn't allow for. For example, many profilers (such as Excimer for PHP) and even GNU coreutils are starting to use them. It would be good to have this be supported.
Having these APIs would allow usage of standard open source tools without having to make modifications or go through less-supported code paths that could impact accuracy of times. Anything that needs to keep track of execution time would be affected.
