CPYTOIMPF for Excel

The only way to make the leading zero visible is to have the field interpret as if it contains only text.

In OS400, if a field is alphanumeric, the number it may contain cannot be used for mathematical operations.

For example, in Excel, to ensure that the field contains text and not numbers, you can insert an apostrophe before the number.

'01234

Using Transfer File of Client Access (System i Access or IBM i ACS) or using ODBC drivers when the PF field is seen as alphanumeric in the Excel sheet it is reported as text and therefore the zero is not lost.

It would be useful if the CPYTOIMPF command could have an option that allows it to achieve the same result.

To date the command does not allow this.

Use Case:

Simplify and satisfy customer needs

Instead of using CPYTOIMPF you can run ACS directly on the IBMi... it will produce an xlsx file on the IFS.

Still, a native *CMD option directly supporting also xml OPEN office file formats (instead of legacy text format) would surely be very nice to have in the system.

IBM does not intend to provide a solution to this request at this time, so it is being closed.

Since this enhancement would introduce a change in behavior, it would require a new data area to enable the function. This implementation option limits the number of clients who will ever adopt the enhancement, lowering its potential value to our community. Therefore, the cost necessary to deliver this feature is not considered worth the anticipated benefit.

The CEAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a “nice to have” LOW priority feature.

Background: The COMMON Europe Advisory Council (CEAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CEAC has a crucial role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community and has therefore reviewed your RFE.

To find out how CEAC help to shape the future of IBM i, see CEAC @ ibm.biz/BdYSYj and the article "The Five Hottest IBM i RFEs Of The Quarter" at ibm.biz/BdYSZT
