Proxy connections support (FTP, sFTP, etc.)

We need an easy way to handle Proxy connections for essential functions today such as information transfers with suppliers and customers. The use of Proxy is complex and not supported, requiring the use of external utilities, imported from AIX, for example. Proxy support could be included in the OS or Open Source tools.

Use Case:

Connect to an sFTP server that forces you to use a Proxy

IBM has previously requested more clarifying information in order to understand the request. The additional information was not provided within 30 days, so the request has been closed.

Thank you for taking the time to submit your request. IBM needs more information to further assess your Request for Enhancement.

The request mentions both FTP and SFTP; do you need FTP/FTPS or SFTP proxy support? Does the ProxyCommand on OpenSSH SFTP not satisfy the needed support for proxies, or are there some other utilities supported on AIX that are not supported on IBM i? What specific external AIX utilities are you requesting support be added for?

The CAAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a medium priority requirement that should be addressed. Although less customers are using proxy these days (since many are moving to REST APIs), there a number of them who still do use proxy, so it would be good to provide the capability.

Background: The COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CAAC has a key role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community, and has therefore reviewed your RFE.
