Clarification of the Technology Refresh

The following is the screen text for the PTF package apply for a special handling or a Technology Refresh PTF pack.

Confirm IPL to Complete PTF Install
System: DATA1
A technology refresh PTF and/or special handling PTF requires an initial
program load (IPL) to complete PTF install processing. A technology
refresh PTF must be permanently applied before a PTF with a technology
refresh requisite (*TRREQ) can be loaded. Special handling PTFs must be
applied before the remaining PTFs in the PTF group can be applied.

Perform a normal mode IPL to complete the PTF install. During the next
unattended IPL, the remaining PTFs will be installed from the following
device:

Device . . . . . . . . : OPTVRT03
Image catalog . . . . . : PTF73

Press F10 to confirm your choice to end all jobs on the system
immediately and automatically IPL the system.
Press F12 to cancel the installation.

Use Case:

On the screen the text for the F12 key says that it is to cancel the the installation. When really it does not cancel the installation but sets the PTFs so that they apply at the next IPL. The screen should be more descriptive about what is actually done. A plain reading of the screen for the F12 key can mislead someone to believe that it will not apply anything. So the proposal is to provide more information on the screen as to what is actually happening.

The CAAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a medium priority requirement that should be addressed. We believe that this handling causes confusion to inexperienced administrators -- IBM should either use a different function key to indicate the install will happen at the next IPL, or change the wording for F12.

IBM will use this request as input to planning but no commitment is made or implied. This request will be updated in the future if IBM implements it. IBM will use votes and comments from others in the community to help prioritize it.
