ICU Threatening to pull EBCDIC support

The ICU organization has a notice on their homepage that they need someone to test ICU on an EBCDIC machine (z or i) or they will move to ASCII-only support which means dropping EBCDIC. I would expect that IBM is the only team that can provide said support/testing for ICU on EBCDIC machines. Therefore we are asking that you provide said support ASAP.

Use Case:

The move to and use of Unicode on IBM i is critical, not only to international language support, but for things like Regular Expression interfaces in SQL and C compilers.

Why was the component changed to Open Source/PASE? Those environments are not EBCDIC. The issue is with the REGEX functions in native DB2 and C which are ebcdic. The component should more likely be set to DB2.

The CAAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a high priority requirement that is important to be addressed. It is important that anything having to do with EBCDIC is not lost -- we need it to continue working.

Background: The COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CAAC has a key role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community, and has therefore reviewed your RFE.
