GENERATE_SQL output to IFS v. PF-SRC

CUSTOMER REP: Darryl
SALESFORCE CASE: TS004844143
ENVIRONMENT: IBM i 7.4 (n/a)
PROBLEM: GENERATE_SQL output to IFS v. PF-SRC
SEVERITY: Opened as a sev 2
BUSINESS IMPACT: How to question

There is the program QSYS2/GENERATE_SQL which I tried to use yesterday. The program worked but it outputs the generate source DDL into a physical file.

The readability of the source file format is poor limited by the length of the record.

There is an alternative by using Schema's in ACS or iNAV. However when debugging in batch and using work files in QTEMP, the SCHEMA option is not available as it cannot access QTEMP.

There is no alternate program/option to generate the source to an IFS file, basically a stream file which is great at being able to read the the code?

Use Case:

When debugging work tables that are run in batch or QTEMP, there is no way to open and view the source in a stream file format.

The only other way is to use GENERATE_SQL whose default/only method is to a PF-SRC file. The PF-SRC is limited by the size of the record 80A and makes it very difficult to read because most of the definition gets split over 2 or more lines.

In addition, as we move to use the IFS to store source, generating source to go into the IFS is essential for the modernization process of the database.

This enhancement was delivered in spring 2021 with IBM i 7.4 PTF Group level 13 and IBM i 7.3 PTF Group level 24.

The GENERATE_SQL procedure has been extended to allow the result to be written to an IFS source stream file.

The CAAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a medium priority requirement that should be addressed. There are alternatives, but this is one of the more useful usability enhancements that could be made.

Background: The COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CAAC has a key role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community, and has therefore reviewed your RFE.

The CEAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a HIGH priority requirement that is important to address.

To have a clean and coherent way to work with SQL and stream files would streamline the process.

IBM will use this request as input to planning but no commitment is made or implied. This request will be updated in the future if IBM implements it.

Note that when output is to a source file, the record length is not limited to 80 characters. That is the minimum length. If your source file has a larger length, it will be used when determining where to break lines.
