Alter table without exclusive lock

Provide possibility to alter table add column without exclusive lock on the table to enable 24x7 deployment with zero downtime for real-time applications.

Possible solution can be done in a same way as online DDL in innodb. (https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.6/en/innodb-online-ddl.html).

Use Case:

System: Banking cards requests authorization system
Use case for the system:
- Calculate balance
- Check account existance
- authorize card transaction (24x7 mode) for all customers
Proposed Scenario:
- New feature has to be added to the system
- Run alter table add column without stopping system jobs as no need for exclusive access for add column.
- Change system programs and restart system jobs using blue/green deployment.

Scenario without RFE:
- New feature has to be added to the system
- Stop system jobs to remove table locks which will make system unavailable
- run alter table add column
- change system programs
- Start System jobs

IBM does not intend to provide a solution to this request at this time, so it is being closed.

While this is an enhancement the Db2 for i database team would like to provide, the high cost of delivering the enhancement would likely still result in an incomplete solution. There are many situations where an alter of a table would either need to fail or require an exclusive lock in order to not break applications that are running. For example, since native applications lock in the format of the table at open time, any changes to the table definition would disrupt the native opens. This legacy requirement makes changes such as this request more difficult to implement.

The CAAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a high priority requirement that is important to be addressed. This is especially important for modernization, 24x7 operation, and credit card industry.

Background: The COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CAAC has a key role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community, and has therefore reviewed your RFE.
