Add Db2 Spatial Extender like functionality to IBMi SQL

In one of our applications we have geo_fencing functionality. When a vehicle enters a location, marked by 4 edges (GPS locations) it shows up on the map.

Because of the lack of a geography Data Type like in other SQL variants (Microsoft, DB2 for Linux/Windows etc) I'm stuck with a very limited border on the map (just squares and rectangles, like shown in the attachment).

If DB2 SQL on IBMi would have similar functionality the geo fencing functionality would be much more precise.

Use Case:

A vehicle sends GPS locations. When it enteres a pre-defined location, marked by four edges (GPS positions) on a map, it shows up on the map.

This enhancement was delivered in December 2022 with with IBM i 7.5 PTF Group level 3 and IBM i 7.4 PTF Group level 23.

Geospatial Analytics has been integrated into Db2 for i.

You can read about it on a new fact page here: https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/6828077
And in a new IBM Documentation topic here: https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/i/7.5?topic=database-geospatial-analytics

IBM will use this request as input to planning but no commitment is made or implied. This request will be updated in the future if IBM implements it.

This is an absolutely highly important request! Fully integrating our i to the ESRI GIS platform cannot be completed without this capability.

The CAAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a high priority requirement that is important to be addressed. This function has value. As the world goes mobile, this requirement becomes more important.

Background: The COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CAAC has a key role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community, and has therefore reviewed your RFE.

For more information about CAAC, see www.common.org/caac

For more details about CAAC's role with RFEs, see http://www.ibmsystemsmag.com/Blogs/i-Can/May-2017/COMMON-Americas-Advisory-Council-%28CAAC%29-and-RFEs/

I'm voting for this RFE since it'd be useful & I think Db2 should be consistent with major features across platforms.

While waiting for delivery, though, you might look into porting SpatiaLite since IBM added sqlite last year.

We see customer who implement AIX with DB2 on another LPAR for this reason. That is not because they want to move to AIX, but because they are forced to do this, due to the absence of the "spatial extender" in DB2 running on i.

Attachment (Description): Now only one GPS position marks the center of a rectangle, calculated by the width and height of a terrain.

1 MERGED

Add the ability to manipulate geospatial data

Merged
In projects that use geospatial data, we need to look for solutions outside the IBM i platform. And other complications end up happening, such as the need for data replication, integration with other platforms, etc.
