IBM Power Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

include SQL scripts in ACS SQL script

Including a ACS sql file into another ACS SQL script file. To minimize redundant "coding" and deployment errors. Also having the same possibility for RUNSQLSTM

Use Case:

To day you can enter any number of SQL statements and run them in a sequence. However the possibility to run existing scrips from stream files i.e. as include myscript.sql does not exists:

ex:
inlclude "myscript.sql";
inlclude "/mydir/myscript.sql";

Or maybe the industry standard:
@inlclude "myscript.sql";
@inlclude "/mydir/myscript.sql";

    Since this RFE has already been marked Delivered based on what the original request was understood to be and what was provided, it would be best to open a separate RFE which clearly states the requirements.

    The problem, ( that is not clear in the RFE - i see) is that the source for the include is supposed to be from the same source where the script runs. That means - if you in a begin/end make an include - then the normal include - which runs on the IBM i - have no chance to read the file from my PC ( aka the git version of the file)

    The @include is done client side in this case. From RUNSQLSTM is run 100 % on IBM. From ACS it will be the same source as the "current open file" is located.

    This RFE is based on better integration for git and devops environments.

    The INCLUDE SQL statement can be leveraged in existing versions of ACS within the body of a compound-statement. For example:

    BEGIN
    INCLUDE SQL '/home/mystuff/included.sql';
    INCLUDE SQL '/home/mystuff/other.sql';
    END

    In version 1.1.8.6, the BEGIN/END wrapper will be implied and will not have to be explicitly provided. For example:

    INCLUDE SQL '/home/mystuff/included.sql';
    INCLUDE SQL '/home/mystuff/other.sql';

    IBM understands this request and will consider it for a future code update, though no commitment is made or implied.

    The CAAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a high priority requirement that is important to be addressed. This enhancement would get a lot of use -- it has broad appeal.

    Background: The COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CAAC has a key role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community, and has therefore reviewed your RFE.
