IBM Power Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

JavaScript (Node.js) as native stored procedure / UDTF language

Today we can use PL/SQL, java and any other ILE language to make stored procedures and UDTF in Db2. However new languages are being used for modern application ie javaScript within Node.js and Python to name a few - and and other languages from the open source are emerging.

So far all of these are running in PASE, so a more generic interface from Db2 to PASE would be appreciated and in general all of these languages supported to have a homogenous development environment between database and application layer.

Use Case:

This example is from snowflake that have implemented javascript / node.js as stored procedure language:

CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE SP_ARRAY_GET_INF_SCHEMA_TABLES (
)
RETURNS VARIANT
LANGUAGE JAVASCRIPT
AS $$
var results_array = [];
var rs = snowflake.createStatement( { sqlText: `SELECT TABLE_SCHEMA,
TABLE_NAME FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TABLES` } ).execute();
while (rs.next()) {
var schema_name = rs.getColumnValue(1);
var table_name = rs.getColumnValue(2);
results_array.push([schema_name, table_name]);
}
return results_array;

    IBM will use this request as input to planning but no commitment is made or implied. This request will be updated in the future if IBM implements it.

    IBM has received the requirement and is evaluating it. IBM will provide a response after evaluation is complete.

    The CAAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a high priority requirement that is important to be addressed. The push lately is to adopt open source -- this would help. Perhaps this could be implemented as suggested by Scott Klement below, to use external calls so this could then be extended to other open source languages more easily.

    I think it'd be better as an external function rather than coded inline.

    Something like EXTERNAL NAME '/usr/lib/myProject/myNodeFunction.js(myFunc)' where it runs a given function in a given piece of code. This way tools like npm can be used to incorporate depdencies, etc.

    The COMMON Europe Advisory Council (CEAC) has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a HIGH priority requirement that is important to address.

    A full-stack programmer needs end-to-end tooling to enable all types of development on IBM i , from UI , applications and database. This enhancement is going to help with that.
