Eliminate an IPL when changing system name

Changing the system name via the CHGNETA command requires an IPL for the system name change to take affect. I would like to see this requirement removed and have the change either become active immediately, or after restarting TCP/IP services.

Use Case:

As part of our disaster recovery process, we need to rename our DR systems to match the production system name. Eliminating an IPL can reduce the recovery process time by 15-30 minutes. I think this DR process is a common requirement for other companies.

Additionally, we use a replication tool for our system migrations to new hardware. When we are ready to migrate onto the new hardware, we need to IPL to change the 'new" system to match the original system name. Removing the IPL would save 15-30 minutes from the migration process.

IBM does not intend to provide a solution to this request, so it is being closed. This RFE is requesting a function that would require a rather significant change to an older architecture and significant effort to implement. That effort would outweigh the benefit.

The CEAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a MEDIUM priority requirement that should be addressed.

Background: The COMMON Europe Advisory Council (CEAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CEAC has a crucial role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community and has therefore reviewed your RFE.

To find out how CEAC help to shape the future of IBM i, see CEAC @ ibm.biz/BdYSYj and the article "The Five Hottest IBM i RFEs Of The Quarter" at ibm.biz/BdYSZT

IBM has received the requirement and is evaluating it. IBM will provide a response after evaluation is complete.
