VPM autostart of hosted partition from the NWSD

Enable autostart capability for i-hosting-i partitions from the Network Server Description when using Virtual Partition Manager (VPM). With an HMC managed system, a hosted partition can be started/IPL'ed by varying on the host NWSD with power control set to *YES. With a VPM hosted configuration, the hosted partition must be started from the host partition Service Tools interface.

Use Case:

i-hosting-i partitions are becoming more popular with smaller customers. adding the autostart capability will allow the system/partitions to come fully active without operator intervention.

Well, I set up a 'brand new' hosted configuration at V7R3, powered the guest partition down, changed the NWSD to Power Control *YES, varied it on, and the guest partition started up. So it does appear to be working.
For some reason I had remembered that it didn't work, hence the RFE. Guess I just hadn't tried it in recent years.
I know I did have a support request in a couple years ago and was told it couldn't be done (or the tech I was talking to didn't fully understand what I wanted to do). I reviewed several VPM setup documents; the later ones use Web Navigator, the earlier ones give all the green-screen commands to use.
The initial NWSD sets power control to *NO, I never saw anything that noted changing it to *YES would enable autostart.
Maybe it was just assumed the reader would know to change it.

Anyway, thank you for looking into this, and this RFE can be closed since it does work as requested.

I do not have a currently open support ticket. Any documentation I could find, plus a previous support request, all stated this will NOT work. There is also no instructions/documentation for configuring this with VPM; there is documentation for an HMC managed system.
I will attempt a new configuration and update this RFE.

Our investigation so far has led to this should already work. Is there some type of support ticket that indicates this is not currently working?

The CEAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a MEDIUM priority requirement that should be addressed.

Background: The COMMON Europe Advisory Council (CEAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CEAC has a crucial role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community and has therefore reviewed your RFE.

To find out how CEAC help to shape the future of IBM i, see CEAC @ ibm.biz/BdYSYj and the article "The Five Hottest IBM i RFEs Of The Quarter" at ibm.biz/BdYSZT
