IBM Power Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Power Systems products, including IBM i. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Capability for parallel save and restore for big library with BRMS and IBM Cloud Storage Solutions for I

We are implementing an IBM i backup solution based on BRMS & IBM Cloud Storage Solutions for I and COS Servers as a replacement of ProtecTIER VTL, and deploying it on 67 IBM i 7.2 and 7.4 partitions.

We absolutely need that IBM provides us the capability to backup in parallel mode and restore automatically from this backup. We need to backup and restore a big library on multiple virtual tapes. These features must be provided and supported with COS solution in order to achieve at least the same backup and recovery times as with ProtecTIER VTL, particularly when we run the BRMS QCLDUSYS01 control group in a restricted state, and when we restore the entire system.

The need is to be able to backup one big library on multiple drives (eg 12 ) in parallel mode (using library list: WRKLBRM).

Use Case:

Parallel save and restore capability with IBM Cloud Storage Solutions for I (5733-ICC) would bring equivalent or better performance than the existing solution with ProtecTIER.

Backup one LPAR with 2793 Go on 3H10 with 12 drives on ProtecTIER.
One LPAR with 2981 Go takes 4H44 with 1 virtual drive on IASP/COS. And with 12 virtual drives, we have 3H20 on IASP/COS

The BRMS team believes that the request described has been solved and is available with the September 2021 BRMS PTFs (7.3 - SI76737, and 7.4 - SI76738).

Maybe you can use some kind of workaround :
    * Create different image catalogs and different ICC configurations and split the list of libraries to save.
    * Save to an image catalog (maybe in parallel, previous point can help) and use AWSCLI , S3CMD or ICC manually to upload in parallel to COS.

I've created a proof of concept saving to SAVF in parallel, compressing and uploading to COS in parallel:

The CAAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM not implement this request. The BRMS backup to the cloud is completely dependent on the line speed, which is not controlled by BRMS.

Background: The COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CAAC has a key role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community, and has therefore reviewed your RFE.

For more information about CAAC, see www.common.org/caac

For more details about CAAC's role with RFEs, see http://www.ibmsystemsmag.com/Blogs/i-Can/May-2017/COMMON-Americas-Advisory-Council-%28CAAC%29-and-RFEs/

The BRMS team will use this request as input to planning but no commitment is made or implied. BRMS will look into addressing the issue of parallel restores for the BRMS and IBM Cloud Storage Solutions for i. BRMS does not accept that there are not any functional or performance gaps when compared to a VTL. The request will be updated in the future if the request is implemented. The BRMS team will use votes and comments from others in the community to help prioritize this request.

The BRMS team needs more information to further assess your Request for Enhancement. BRMS is willing to look into providing parallel save and restore support for the BRMS and IBM Cloud Storage Solutions for i. Before BRMS starts investigation on this, we want to make it clear that the BRMS team does not do performance testing and we do not claim that using parallel save and restore support with BRMS and IBM Cloud Storage Solutions for i will perform equivalent or better than the existing ProtectTIER solution. The BRMS and IBM Cloud Storage Solutions for i was developed for small customer environments saving less than 2TB of data per day. Cloud connectivity was not developed as a replacement alternative for physical or Virtual Tape Library (VTL) devices. It is important to be aware that backup and restore operations using this cloud solution involves two stages. BRMS manages one stage of the operation and the other stage is controlled by the IBM Cloud Storage Solutions for i product. BRMS feels that the main performance impacts will be during the volume transfers, which is NOT controlled by BRMS. Any performance issues with volume transfers will need to be addressed outside of BRMS. Please respond that you understand that by BRMS providing this support, the BRMS team can not claim equivalent or better performance than the existing solution.
