ALLOW i.e. READ opcode to return a value or be usable in expressions

Would be nice to have an idiomatic way to loop a series of record in RPG, like for example other common languages.

For example

----------
Dow not READ(myfile) = %EOF
processing
Enddo
----------

Will allow for an idiomatic way to loop records, to be adopted by the industry.
READ will produce a side effect (file pointer) and still return and indicator or status datastructure (to be tested with BIFs or other ways.

Use Case:

Dow not READ(myfile) = %EOF
processing
Enddo

instead of

READ myfile
dow not %Eof(myfile)
processing
READ myfile
enddo

instead of other variants that requires an DOU + internal IF or infinite loop with internal READ

    IBM does not intend to provide a solution to this request at this time, so it is being closed.

    While it would be useful to have a matching built-in function for each I/O operation code, it is very unlikely that IBM would implement such an enhancement in the next few years.

    The CEAC has reviewed this requirement and recommends that IBM view this as a MEDIUM priority requirement that should be addressed.

    Background: The COMMON Europe Advisory Council (CEAC) members have a broad range of experience in working with small and medium-sized IBM i customers. CEAC has a crucial role in working with IBM i development to help assess the value and impact of individual RFEs on the broader IBM i community and has therefore reviewed your RFE.

    To find out how CEAC help to shape the future of IBM i, see CEAC @ ibm.biz/BdYSYj and the article "The Five Hottest IBM i RFEs Of The Quarter" at ibm.biz/BdYSZT

    On the other hand. I think it might be as easy to make a procedure that reads the file and returns the status of EOF().

    Then you could have something like this
    Dow readMyFile();
    .
    .
    enddo;

    and readMyFile() returns the value of not %EOF()

    Thank you for having submitted this RFE. It is on my wish list since the day the last dinosaur died and I wonder why I did not create an RFE myself.
