Trim Leading Spaces when joining lines (alt-J)

Being able to join lines with alt-J is very nice. It would be preferable if the join would trim off leading spaces of what is being joined and possibly add a single space so the join doesn't but up directly against the last character of the line you're joining to.

Use Case:

However every time I do it I need to delete out usually a good 20 or more spaces. So it would save time. I use this in both RPG & CL.

This feature was delivered in version 9.6. This now supports CL in addition to RPG.

The feature that is described in this request is a candidate for a future release.

This feature is now available as part of the IBM Rational Developer for i 9.5.1.2 Fix Pack.

    Product web page: http://www.ibm.com/software/products/us/en/dev-ibm-i
    Fix list: http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg27038481#9512
    Download doc: http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg24043552

Note: This is only supported for RPG and the RFE will remain open until implemented for CL.

It shouldn't be too difficult to implement this (just like suggested by DaveLClarkI below) as this is exactly how LPEX already behaves for COBOL.

Please note this excellent workaround in the mean time contributed by Buck Calabro on the wdsci-l list

"Then I stumbled upon action oneSpace. Until we get this RFE fulfilled,
oneSpace may help those circumstances where there are many spaces to delete.

Cursor to line to be joined to.
End to get to end of line.
Alt-j to join the following line to this one.
Escape to get to the command line.
    action oneSpace
--if you use this a lot, up arrow will summon it from the hstory
    Enter.
Escape to get back to the editor.

    --
    --buck"

I am voting for this; however, when joining lines if the text cursor is after the last non-blank character of the first line then the second line should line up with the text cursor after removing leading spaces -- preserving the implied spaces between the last non-blank character of the first line and the position of the text cursor.

Although the theme of this request is consistent with our business strategy, it is not committed to the release that is currently under development.

A preliminary evaluation of this request indicates that it is consistent with our business strategy. Further evaluation of this RFE is underway.
