Track the depth of F3 (open declaration) so that Alt+Q can return back up the path traveled.

Track the depth of F3 (open declaration) so that Alt+Q can return back up the path traveled. Allows developer to perform a program flow analysis.

Use Case:

We have many sub routines and/or procedures called from other sub routines and/or procedures. When we use the Open Declaration (F3) in RPG the return (findQuickMark) can only go back to the most recent reference.

Instead I would like to see F3 track each return source so that I may "drill down" into code several layers deep and return to a higher level in the program code.

The Application Diagram is of no use to me since its slow in generating, its sluggish, no ability to just diagram sub routines or internal procedures and it does not diagram the show program flow.

We have implemented/delivered in RDi 9.1.1.
We now support both hyperlink and F3 for declaration of variables, procedures and subroutines in the same source but you now need to press Alt + Left/Right to switch between the previous and the current location instead of Alt+Q.

    Thanks for your support

We are happy to report that this functionality was delivered as of RDi 9.1.1
You can now use Alt-Left, Alt-Right to traverse an infinite depth of F3 (open declarations) and go in either direction.

Since hyperlinks, along with the new functionality provided in V9 (Alt+Left and Alt+Right) should be sufficient for your request, this RFE will be rejected. If what is provided does not fulfill your request, please feel free to reopen the RFE.
Please note as well that there have been significant improvements to the live outline and DDS in V9, and the V9 fix packs.
Thank you for taking the time to suggest this enhancement to our product. Many of our product enhancements result from feedback from our customers, so your input is always very important to us.

Okay i miss understood what the Hyperlinks with left click were accomplishing. I normally do not have live outline on because the DDS parser chews through my memory heap really fast if its on.

I only thought for some reason that the hyperlink click was for data items not other code items.

If i can Alt+left (or right) arrow back to mulitple prior code points from where I clicked on hyperlinks then I would say the new changes in V9.0 wuold statisfy this request.

However, I have not gotten access to V9.0 to try it out.

I have seen that functionality on midrange.com but I have yet to be able to try v9.x but i am excited to try the new Alt+Left or Right arrow in conjunction with the Hyperlink declarations.

However, this functionality is not what I was asking for. The feature I would like to see added, tracks the open declarations so that I can be allowed to traverse backwards to the first open declaration.

Not all sub routunes or procedures are self explanitory or contain a lot of work so its necessary to go into those items.

Starting in V9.0 you now have the ability to move forward and backward through code locations via Alt+Left and Alt+Right. Although we are that this still does not work for F3, it does work for hyperlink. Hyperlink is much the same as F3, in that it takes you to definitions. To use hyperlinks, hold Ctrl while your mouse is over the name that you wish to navigate to the definition of, and a hyperlink will appear (blue and underlined) that you can click on. To navigate back up the path traveled.

We are aware that we need to synchronize the F3 and hyperlink actions, but is this workaround sufficient for your needs right now?

This RFE is consistent with our strategy and product roadmap and IBM is continuing to evaluate.
