Merged idea
This idea has been merged into another idea. To comment or vote on this idea, please visit IBMI-I-1417 RPG - Conditional (Ternary) Operator (?:) in EVAL operation.

Ternary opertor BIF - e.g. (%IIF Inline If) Merged

A ternary operator/BIF improves readability, particularly when building strings or setting parameters on calls to programs or procedures as it reduces the number of if .. endif blocks in code and removes the need for a workfield to hold a parameter value. This is a feature that is available in most other languages taking a form along the lines of expression ? trueval : falseval; The expression is evaluated and if it equates to true, trueval is returned - otherwise falseval is returned.

In RPG it could take the form of a BIF - e.g. %IIF(expression : trueval : falseval)

A trivial example - a construct like:

if (customer.status = 'A');

  wkStatus = 'active';

else;

  wkStatus = 'inactive'

endif;

xmlstring = '<?xml version="1.0"><customer><name>Bob</name><status> ‘;

xmlstring = %trim(xmlstring) + wkStatus + '</status></name</customer>';

Could be replaced with a single line of code:-

xmlstring = '<?xml version="1.0"><customer><name>Bob</name><status> ' + %iif(customer.status = 'A' : 'active' : 'inactive') + '</status></name</customer>';
